Doctors Without Borders (MSF)

Case reports provide insights into what works, for which patients, under some of the most difficult circumstances and help MSF fulfill its mission to provide medical care regardless of gender, race, religion, creed, or political affiliation — and with limited resources. The CARE guidelines offer insight from the point of care into how best to treat individual patients who need medical care the most.

MSF’s first mission was in Managua, Nicaragua after a devastating earthquake. In 1974, it set up a relief mission to help the people of Honduras after flooding from Hurricane Fifi killed thousands of people. The first large-scale medical program of MSF was established in 1975, providing medical care to Cambodian refugees seeking sanctuary from the regime of Pol Pot.

Since its founding, MSF has treated over a hundred million patients—with 8.25 million outpatient consultations being carried out in 2014 alone. MSF has maintained institutional and financial independence and delivers effective and timely aid to those who need it most.
